Liv Tyler’s Skincare Routine Made Affordable

Updated: Aug 14, 2019

Liv Tyler’s 25-step beauty routine is all sorts of inspiring – but the price tag is not. Find out how you can get her routine the affordable way.

Liv Tyler recently released her 25-step beauty routine as part of Vogue’s celebrity beauty secrets series, which should have otherwise been called “Arwen’s Immortality Routine”. Seeing this elf goddess carefully apply extensive skincare products to her flawless skin is all sorts of inspiring – but the price tag is not. Here is the affordable, Australian-friendly version of her routines.

Unless you live under a rock that does not involve the beauty world in any way, you will be aware that Vogue has been releasing beauty routines from famous celebrities in the comfort of their own home. The most recent video in the series is by actress Liv Tyler, who demonstrates her extensive, 25-step beauty routine with a soothing ASMR-style voice, which should have otherwise been called “Arwen’s Immortality Routine”.

While her routine is time-consuming, you can’t help but feel inspired by her love for skincare and by how flawless her skin looks in her early 40s. If you were hoping to take her routine as gospel by buying every product she uses and transforming into an elf princess, the price tags of some of these items might cause those dreams to collapse as quickly as Mordor when Frodo (finally) let go of the Ring. That or you realise that some of the more affordable products are not available in Australia. #straya am I right?

But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here, you’ll find a list of the products she uses and some affordable (less than $100) counterparts that are available in Australia.

Disclaimer: I am not paid to endorse any of these products.

If you really want to embody Liv Tyler’s entire routine, start off by pulling your hair back into a scrunchie, which is a cute and safer option for your hair, ensuring it won’t be damaged by harsh elastic. Her scrunchie is designer, made from old ermez fabric by a friend in England. Because of course it is.

Just pick up a cheap scrunchie from Target and let’s get started.

1. CLEANSER/OIL MAKE-UP REMOVER

I am a huge advocate for using oil-based makeup removers to start a skincare routine, and it’s great to see Liv Tyler shares this vision. She uses the Sarah Chapman Ultimate Cleanse Cleansing Oil, which comes in at $88 AUD, but alas, is not available in Australia.

The affordable recommendation:

FRESH | Seaberry Skin Nutrition Cleansing Oil – RRP $60

Like Sarah Chapman, this cleansing oil is filled with omega and removes all waterproof makeup without drying out your skin. You can pick it up from your local Sephora or buy it online.

L’Occitane | Cleansing Oil-to-Milk – RRP $32

Enriched with Immortelle essential oil, this oil cleanser removes all makeup while keeping the face hydrated and providing powerful anti-aging properties.

2. CLEANSER | FACE SOAP

Tyler uses a face soap from a Japanese brand called Chidoriya, which is made from silk and rice bran. Extra, but you can’t help but love it. It’s only $20, but it’s not available in Australia. Nothing ever is…

KORA Organics | Unscented Cleansing Bar – RRP $14.95

Made from goat’s milk, this gentle cleansing bar is suitable for all skin types and features a mix of organic oils, including coconut, canola, sunflower and rosehip, to nourish, detox and hydrate your skin.

3. EXFOLIATION

“The secret to beautiful skin is exfoliation” – how right you are Liv! It’s so important to buff all those dead skin cells away to reduce dullness and dryness, and ensure the new cells are gaining important nutrients and moisture.

Tyler uses Astara Blue Flame Purification Mask, and I have never wanted anything so badly. Seeing her cover her face in blue, looking like the prettiest smurf in the world, and then wash it off to reveal bright, glowing skin, is something I desperately need in my life. It’s only $60, but, so very sadly, is not available down under.

Alya Skin | Pink Clay Mask – RRP $49.99

Swap the pink for blue and incorporate a mix of Australian kaolin clay, aloe, vitamin C and much more, and you’ve got a pretty close contender to the Astara mask.

4. HYDRATING MASK

After exfoliating it’s important to do a hydrating mask. Tyler uses the Deep Hydrating Mask from Dr Barbara Sturm and – oh my goodness – it’s available in Australia! Finally! Unfortunately it’s also coming in at $226…so never mind.

Kosmea | Reveal Your Glow Mask – RRP $24.95

This gentle mask packed with natural ingredients including kaolin clay, rise flour, chamomile and rose hips will hydrate your skin and reveal your natural vitality.

5. CBD OIL

First of all, what even is that? Well, it’s concentrated cannabis. Yup! Tyler says it helps her with anxiety but doesn’t make her feel stoned. Good to know, Tyler. Her brand is from Lord Jones for$100.

Currently CBD Oil is not legal in Australia unless you get a specialised script that is approved by the government in order to deal with a medical condition. So in lieu of this, I recommend having a big mug of your favourite hot drink and going outside and taking a deep breath of fresh air. This is, of course, not a cure to actual anxiety and if you are experiencing any symptoms you should consult your GP. But for minor cases of anxiousness this will help, and it won’t cost you over $100 and potentially get you thrown in jail. Win-win!

6. SERUM

Tyler follows up her cannabis trip with serum! She’s a huge fan of hyaluronic acid, as it helps skin retain moisturiser, helping to combat signs of aging, redness, dryness and irritation.

She uses Dr Sturm Hyalaronic Serum, which comes in pretty at $453.

Here are some alternatives to save you from spending all your monthly earnings on serum.

The Ordinary | Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 – RRP $6.80

With a delightfully low price tag, this product is an old favourite for a reason as it has been proved to work time and time again.

Soko Glam | Waterfall Moist Balanced Hyaluronic Acid 100 – RRP $23

This product contains 100% pure sodium hyaluronate, a water-soluble form of hyalaronic acid that is able to more effectively penetrate and hydrate the skin than standard hyalaronic acid.

Tyler recommends putting the serum (and any following moisturisers) on your hands and neck. Follow this as gospel because your hands and neck show the first signs of aging.

7. FACIAL MASSAGER

Tyler then brings out an instrument that looks…suspicious…but is actually very popular in the skincare world, especially in Asia. This is a facial massager and can help to reduce puffiness, bloating, pigmentation and can even literally push blemishes away. Sarah Chapman’s facial massager comes in at $80, but is not available in Australia.

The Skin Gym Face Sculptor from Sephora is one of the best facial massagers on the Australian market right now, but as it comes in at $119, it doesn’t technically classify as “affordable” for this list.

So, for the super cheap affordable version of a facial sculptor I’m about to share with you an amazing solution – a Chinese spoon.

House | Maxwell & Williams White Basics Spoon – RRP $2

Yep. The humble Chinese spoon can be used as a replacement. Simply use it after you’ve put on your facial oil and, before you wash it off, run the curved edge of the spoon up from your chin along your jawline ten times on each side, and then out from your nose to your ear, and up from your décolletage along your neck. It may not be quite as effective as Tyler’s massager, but you will have slimmer, less puffy skin after.

8. EYES

To combat puffy eyes, Tyler uses the Eye Therapy Patch from Talika, which, shockingly, is available in Australia and is affordable, at $85 from Mecca. How exciting!

For a cheaper alternative you can use:

Tarte | Pack Your Bags 911 Undereye Rescue Patches – RRP $27

Featuring a coconut oil-infused serum, these patches are soothing and will help to cool and reduce the puffiness of tired eyes.

For an even cheaper DIY alternative, you can put chamomile teabags in the fridge overnight and in the morning lay them over your eyes for 5-10 minutes. The chilled chamomile will cool and soothe, and includes antioxidant’s to reduce pigmentation.

9. MOISTURISER | OIL

Again, Tyler shows her preference for using oils, and pushes the necessity for massaging your face as much as possible. Take her advice on massaging the eyes with a grain of salt – while you should massage them, be careful not to rub as they are extremely sensitive. Use your ring finger to gently push under your eyes from the inner corners to the outer to help flush the fluid out.

She uses Rodin Luxury Face Oil, available in Australia but at $260.

Go-To Skincare | Face Hero – RRP $45

This little pot of gold is a lightweight face oil that deeply hydrates, soothes, revitalises and protects the skin, featuring essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, which will hydrate, brighten and revive your skin.

10. MOISTURISER | CREAM

Tyler uses Avène Rich Compensating Cream, a surprisingly affordable moisturiser that is actually available Down Under at $63.50. Oh happy day! It is formulated for very dry skin to nourish and protect.

For an alternative try:

L’Occitane | Shea Ultra Rich Comforting Cream – RRP $57

Formulated with 25% Shea butter, this cream will ensure very dry and sensitive skin and will stay hydrated and comfortable all day long.

11. FACE MIST

It’s always important to conclude your routine – whether it be skincare or makeup – with a hydrating face mist. Tyler uses Floral Spray Mist from Sisley, which does ship to Australia, but is $120.

Mario Badescu | Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater – RRP $10

A refreshing mix of herbal extracts and rosewater, this facial spray is a gentle, hydrating conclusion to your skincare routine, or can be an invigorating pick-me-up throughout the day.

With this list on-hand, now is the time to construct your very own Liv Tyler-inspired skincare routine, almost guaranteed to turn you into an immortal elf princess. Almost.
